SkLO
Blending California Design with Czech Tradition
SkLO creates one-of-a-kind glass light fixtures and sculptural objects that can be seen in many of the world’s top hotels, restaurants, retailers and residences. Designed in SkLO’s Northern California studio, the products are handblown in the Czech Republic in the tradition of glass artistry that dates as far back as the Renaissance.
SkLO balances a refined, modern design sensibility with a deep respect for craft and for the richness of the materials they use. There’s an inherent unexpectedness in Czech glassblowing that each product embodies, with subtle irregularities that make it a unique reflection of its heritage.
The team invited Office to help tell their story in a way that would honor their balance of elevated modern design and timeless craft tradition. We evolved the visual identity and reimagined the website as a virtual showroom, aiming to inspire interior designers and architects as they discover new products.
The logotype’s letterforms evoke the shapes of SkLO’s products, including the slight imperfections that indicate a sense of handcraftedness. A signature monogram, representing a traditional form of identification, was designed with a distinctly modern feel and inspired by the lines of a SkLO chandelier.
The website features rich imagery to highlight the products’ beauty, as well as design sketches and images of the glassblowing process that show the intention and craft behind a SkLO piece. Clear navigation and and re-imagined content guide users through the experience.
Further extending this work, Office created a print and digital lookbook that celebrates the inherent beauty and uniqueness of the products
Together, the new brand expressions pay homage to the rich history of Czech glassblowing, while establishing SkLO as a leader in modern glass design.
This is the kind of relationship you want with a design firm. Office was collaborative, while confident in their point of view to help us realize our vision. They listened, we let go, and they nailed it.
